Reviving Island Spirit: “It’s Vashon Isle!” Transports Audience Back in Time for a Historic Show

Modern-Day “Voice” Jeff Hoyt Brings P. Monroe Smock’s 1926 Radio Show to Life at Vashon Center for the Arts

Our small island with a big voice is set to witness a magical rewind to 1926. “It’s Vashon Isle!”, presented by Vashon Repertory Theater, promises a rich, nostalgic journey blending history, music, and community spirit, scheduled for October 13-15 at the Vashon Center for the Arts.

The island faced significant challenges a century ago post-global flu pandemic, leading to a demographic shift. The island needed new residents, and who better to lure them than the island’s passionate advocate and paper editor, P. Monroe Smock. Smock seized the Seattle radio airwaves, painting an enticing portrait of Vashon life, complete with live music and gifts, attracting hundreds to the vibrant island.

Fast forward to 2023, Jeff Hoyt, Vashon’s contemporary “Voice”, is set to revive this chapter of history. Re-enacting Smock’s original script, Hoyt will be accompanied by visuals of the landmarks and faces that fueled Smock’s zeal, drawing parallels between Vashon’s past and present.

But the unique allure of “It’s Vashon Isle!” lies in its evolving nature – no two shows are identical! A dynamic ensemble of Vashon’s favorite performers will grace the stage each evening, offering an eclectic blend of songs from the original program and contemporary reflections on island life.

This captivating journey through time is more than just a show; it reflects Vashon’s resilient spirit and celebrates its community. “This is a show about us…and how we roll when change is afoot,” reads the event’s description, emphasizing its relevance in connecting past lessons with current realities.

Additionally, the event serves a charitable cause, as proceeds will go towards supporting the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum & Voice of Vashon.
