Nestled on scenic Vashon Island, Vashon High School is an idyllic place to learn and grow as a person. The school is a four-year, fully accredited public high school and is a member of the Vashon Island School District. Vashon High School is committed to demonstrating the district’s guiding principle of “equipping every student to engage, thrive, and contribute in an ever-changing world”. With 44 staff members and a student population of 540, the school boasts a high teacher to student ratio. This personal attention is one of many traits which make the school a standout place to learn. The school opened a new campus facility in 2014 and has since received numerous awards at both the state and national level for its unique design and sustainability offerings.
As a winner of the prestigious silver medal award for the U.S. News & World Report annual ranking of the country’s schools, the Pirates of Vashon are proud of their annual graduation rate rising to nearly 95 percent. Over 80 percent of the graduating seniors go on to attend two and four-year colleges. The Advanced Placement participation rate at Vashon High School is nearly 50 percent, signifying a strong commitment of the school to challenge every student to achieve at the highest level of academic pursuits. According to the popular Niche school rating site, the school receives an overall “A” rating. The average SAT score of its students is 1230, while the average ACT score is 29. The high test scores are a reflection of the hard-working students and the high engagement demonstrated between faculty and their pupils.
Because of the school’s small island location, the community offers exceptional support to all the students and their endeavors both inside and outside of the classroom. Led by Athletic Director Andy Sears, the school competes with other area division 1A schools in the Nisqually Athletics Conference, sponsoring teams in 18 sports. Boys sports include football, tennis, cross country, basketball, wrestling, baseball, golf, soccer, and track. Girls sports include soccer, volleyball, cross country, cheer, basketball, golf, softball-fastpitch, tennis, and track. To assist students in all of their athletic pursuits, the residents of Vashon Island lead efforts to cultivate strong sports boosters clubs, sponsor a community scholarship foundation, and encourage a healthy support system of corporate sponsorships.
In addition to a diverse and vibrant athletics scene, the school is proud of its many other extra-curricular activities. The school’s state of the art Performing Arts Wing (PAW) showcases a theater with a seating capacity of 265, make-up and dressing rooms, a sound-proof rehearsal area, and a band room, offering the ultimate in a high school theater experience. The school also offers a myriad of additional ways for students to get involved, including student government opportunities, honor society, yearbook, debate, outdoor clubs, foreign language clubs, and more. There is something for everyone at Vashon Island High School!
