Bringing your dog to Vashon Island

A Visitor’s Perspective with Updates from a Resident

From a visitor’s perspective, Vashon Island in Washington State is the perfect place to bring your pup! With its scenic hikes, beautiful beaches, and abundant outdoor activities, you will surely have an amazing time. Here are some tips to help you and your canine companion make the most of your visit in 2023.

Why It Is The Perfect Place For Your Dog

The island is great for dogs because of its quiet, rural setting. Vashon has over 40 trails, perfect for taking your pup on a scenic hike! There are also plenty of beaches to explore where you can have fun in the sun. Plus, there are plenty of pet-friendly cafes and restaurants including Dig Deep Gardens, and the Eagles Club that are off-leash friendly for dogs for when you feel like sitting down for lunch or dinner.

Places To Take Your Dog

The island is great for taking your dog for a walk or hike. There are many trails to explore, and dogs are welcome on most of them as long as they are kept on leash. KVI Beach is on private land and therefore doesn’t have to adhere to the King County leash laws, though there are signs asking that dogs remain on leash.

Things To Do With Your Dog

Your pup will love exploring all the sights, sounds, and smells the island offers! You can explore the trails, go on a beach walk, or have some fun in the sun at nearby parks. We recommend visiting one of the pet-friendly cafes or restaurants.

How To Make Sure Your Dog Has A Great Time On The Island

Keeping a few things in mind would be best to ensure your dog has a great time. Be aware that the island’s private beaches and private land are all off-leash friendly. That means dogs are free to roam, and they’re not required to be on a leash at all times. If your dog isn’t used to being off-leash, keeping them on a dog leash during your visit to Vashon is best, and we recommend carrying pepper spray or bear spray in case of an encounter.

In addition, remember that only some people love dogs as much as you do. Some people may be afraid of dogs or not appreciate having a dog jump on them or bark excessively. There are also many horseback riders on the Island, and if your dog is not familiar with horses, or a breed that could potentially harm them, keep that in mind when on our trails. Be respectful of other people’s space, and keep your dog under control at all times.

Taking your pup to this island is a great way to have an unforgettable adventure. With its scenic trails, beaches, and abundance of outdoor activities, there’s something for everyone. Remember to keep your dog on a leash when needed, be respectful of other people and their space, and remember the basics, like food and water.
