Why Vashon-Maury Islands?

Vashon-Maury Island is commonly called “Vashon” because the two islands are connected by a built-up isthmus, making them function as a single entity. Originally separated by a narrow channel known as the Portage, this gap was filled in, physically linking Vashon and Maury Islands. As a result, they are often treated and referred to as one island.
